Sean Hurley

Riding Discipline (or lack of): MTB, road and longer track races. I’m like a wild horse that can’t be tamed into one discipline

Favourite Riding spot: Alice Springs, hands down.

Short and long term goals: To keep smashing it, and to be competitive at the highest level while still rocking like no other.

Favourite Bike: Road: Time VXRS dripping in sram red. MTB: Lynskey with XX, 1 x 10. Track: british track team ones are all class, I’d run them polished silver shamals. NB: All bikes must have tubulars for racing. All of them!

Years Racing: I started ‘racing’ 4 dual slalom (anyone remember that?) at 14, so 9 of the finest years available

When did you begin cycling and why?: I rode a bmx to high school, my brother caught the bus. I learnt very quickly that cycling is by far the best mode of transport. No waiting for buses or the mum taxi, so much faster and more independent!

Have you suffered any serious injuries cycling? Describe what and how: I fractured my collar bone racing a crit. I overcooked it into a dicey corner. It was a small price to pay in making sure my housemate didn’t win an intermediate sprint, which would’ve hurt more. I’ve also been cleaned up by a car. He says he didn’t see me, I say he didn’t like the way his girlfriend was looking at me ;-) 2010 has been the year of minor set backs with injuries though, new years day I had head injury, then a fractured vertebrae, then a sliced knee. I prefer the big injuries, you accept your fate, little ones are never allowed to properly recover.

Describe your greatest cycling achievement to date: I’ve won the odd crit, madison, minor tour and the expert class at the 08/09 national series, but working to defend the yellow jersey with Ash at the tour of timor was fantastic. It was on the queen stage over the spine of the island, loads of climbing, and I surprised myself. You can hurt yourself more for someone else than you can for yourself.

Describe your worst race or cycling experience: When I was 16 or so I was at the baw baw nation round of DH. On the shuttle bus up there was a seat next to model/athlete/babe Niki Gudex. I took it. It was great, probably the best cycling experience. I didn’t ask her to marry me, and now I’m always wondering what could’ve been. Niki if you read this, call me. Michelle, if you read this, sorry. Scott’s sister, if you read this, you can marry me too.

Describe your favourite race: My favourite race would be one where I get to smash it for while listing to appetite for destruction played live, and they’d be lots of fire, leather, dancers, and when I won Lemmy from Motorhead would give me a huge novelty check. I guess the closest thing to that in reality would be the Sunday Roast: hard endurance track racing with good tunes.
