  • Jan comes Fourth at the Australian Long Distance Triathlon Championships

    February 11, 2012

    Location: Falls Creek, Victoria

A Chilly Saturday mornning welcomed the Aussie Champs at the famous Ski Resort of Falls Creek. Stunning men field included Joe Gambles, Tim Reed,Luke Bell, David Dellow, Mich Anderson, Lindsey Wall with some international flavour from New Zealand, Italy, Austria and Czech. Double Olympic distance felt much harder on the hilly course in the altitude of 1600 to 1700m.
At 7:20 a.m. the gun went off and half way through the 2km diamond shaped swim course a smaller front group formed. I worked my way through to exit the pristine water lake in 1st place and 3rd at he T1 respectively.
On the bike Luke Bell hit it really hard on his Argon TT machine and with only Joe Gambles and Tim Reed in ninety-seconds contact. A serious bike crash made downhill technical passage even slower due to ambulance car barricading the road forcing the cyclist´s 2-way traffic into one line. The weather was getting colder as greyish cold clouds rolled the curtain over the early morning sun. At the end of the bike I came 5th into the transition using the Prima Rolf Carbon 38mm secret weapon. Ex-pro rider Casey M. pulled out of the 2-lap cross country run which contained 4 sharp hills.
Athletes had the opportunity to run on the beautiful trails around the Aqueduct creeks surrounded by the fragrant Eucalypt trees. In the front of the mens' field the battle was on. Joe Gambles closed on Luke Bell. After the first 5kms Joe took the lead and Tim Reed looked determined in second place Luke third, Rehula 4th. Around the 12km mark I passed Luke Bell who might have imposed too much pain on his quads during the bike-ride. After enjoying a few kilometres in the podium position I could feel the intense pace of Mitch Anderson behind my back. I tried to match his speed but his surges were too much for my brief training base. In the end I was more than happy with the 4th place. In the second half of the run Tim Reed took over the lead from Joe Gambles while Mitch Anderson rounded up the podium. It felt great to race such a strong PRO field.
In the womens race current Ironman70.3 Mel Rollison defeated the 2011 Falls Creek Champion Madelaine Oldfield.

  • Team Mount Beauty Tawonga Gap Christmas Handicap

    December 20, 2011

    Location: Mount Beauty

A local annual event that gets a bit bigger and a lot harder each year. Went off scratch giving 21mins start to 3 schoolboys who no one saw again after they got up in 34 minutes ! Personally I had a severe case of "Post Bad Tour of Bright Anger" happening and got to half way in a touch over 10mins but faded to finish in 21:49. A new PB 3 years after I set my old PB so still improving at this beautiful sport !

    Location: Bright

Aaron Knight donned the Jersey for the classic hill suffer fest that is the Tour of Bright. Here's what he had to say:

My key race of the year that I had focused on since June. Good form, perfect weather, plenty of time in training on the race climbs had me keen to race hard in B Grade and hopefully go well...but .... I got a stomach bug 5 days out, the lead car went the wrong way on the first corner and caused a mass pile up, I missed the early break, then we got caught by Master 123 and our grade was neutralized behind them and it was race over !

So I went to my daughters' Ballet concert and instead of bailing after 10mins to go and do my TT , I stayed and watched her get a trophy..... that made me smile.

Congratulations to the Fitzroy Revolution Boys that competed in this years Crocodile Trophy. Not only did the guys all manage to finish this years event but also managed a 3rd in the Team Classification, as well as a few podiums on stages to boot. Not bad considering the monumental task of just finishing this gruelling event.

  • Surf Coast 3/6/12 Hour

    October 22, 2011

    Location: Anglesea, Victoria

Duncan Murray hadn't made it to this event previously and had heard many good things about it so was keen to give it a crack this year. Here's how he went:

It was good to see a different crowd and trails as well as a handful of old timers. The course was fairly straight forward but for some reason very taxing on the legs. I was in a 6hr mixed team and we were holding 1st/Category and 2nd/Overall for most of the day but the last lap came down to our girl vs their guy and as fast as Amity is she couldn't beat Australia's under 19 XCO champ so we slipped back to 2nd/Cat 3rd/Overall with 30 seconds to go on the clock.
